Fuji Rock

Fuji Rock Festival stands as Japan's largest and most prestigious outdoor music event, annually drawing over 100,000 music enthusiasts to Naeba Ski Resort in the picturesque Niigata Prefecture. Traditionally held over the last weekend of July, this three-day festival offers an immersive experience with over 200 performances by renowned Japanese and international artists, spanning a wide range of genres including rock, pop, electronic, hip-hop, jazz, and world music.

Its history dates back to 1997, when the inaugural edition took place at the foot of Mount Fuji, hence its name. However, after a challenging first year due to a typhoon, and a brief stint in Toyosu, Tokyo, the festival found its permanent home at Naeba Ski Resort in 1999, a mountainous environment offering a cooler atmosphere and spectacular scenery. Despite the change in location, the original name has remained an identifying mark.

Fuji Rock is not just music; it's a celebration of culture and nature. The venue features multiple stages, from the imposing Green Stage with a capacity for nearly 50,000 people, to more intimate stages like Field of Heaven or the Red Marquee, the only indoor one. Attendees can enjoy long walks between stages through forests and streams, and even take the Dragondola, the world's longest gondola lift, for panoramic views of the festival. In addition to concerts, the festival offers various activities such as yoga sessions, film screenings, burlesque shows, and children's play areas. A fundamental aspect of Fuji Rock is its commitment to sustainability, implementing numerous initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, such as recycling programs, the use of biodegradable materials, and the promotion of public transport, aiming to be "the cleanest festival in the world."

GUIDE

Complete guide of Fuji Rock

Attending Fuji Rock Festival is an unforgettable experience that requires good preparation. Here's a comprehensive guide to make the most of your musical adventure in Naeba.

Tickets and Accommodation: Demand is high. Purchase your tickets (3-day passes or daily tickets) and camping passes as soon as they go on sale, usually several months in advance. Accommodation options include camping on-site (the most affordable and closest option to the action, but requires your own gear), staying at the Naeba Prince Hotel (on-site, but expensive and books up quickly), or in hotels, ryokans (Japanese inns), and minshukus (guest houses) in Naeba, Asagai, or nearby towns like Mitsumata and Tashiro, accessible by shuttle bus. Booking well in advance is crucial.

Transportation: The most efficient route from Tokyo is to take the Joetsu Shinkansen (bullet train) to Echigo-Yuzawa Station (approx. 90 minutes). From there, official shuttle buses (paid on the way there, free on return) take you to the festival (40-60 minutes). There are also official bus tours from various cities in Japan that may include tickets and accommodation. If driving, you'll need a specific parking pass, which also sells out and is purchased with festival tickets.

What to Pack: Be prepared for all types of weather. Even in summer, the mountains can bring intense sun, torrential rain, and cool nights. Essentials: good quality waterproof gear (jacket and trousers), hiking boots or sturdy waterproof footwear (the ground gets very muddy with rain), several layers of clothing, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A small backpack to carry water, snacks, and your essentials during the day is very useful. If camping, you'll need a tent, sleeping bag, and mat.

During the Festival: The site is extensive, with stages scattered across a beautiful natural environment. Wear comfortable shoes, as you'll be walking a lot, sometimes on steep paths. Check the map and schedules to plan which artists to see. Don't limit yourself to the main stages; explore the smaller ones to discover hidden gems. Enjoy the Dragondola for panoramic views. There's a wide variety of food and drink stalls. Participate in sustainability initiatives by sorting your trash correctly. Stay hydrated and rest when you need to. The atmosphere is friendly and respectful; enjoy the music and nature in harmony.
