Glastonbury

Glastonbury Festival, fully named Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, is a five-day cultural event that transforms the idyllic Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, England, into a vibrant city of music and art. Founded by Michael Eavis in 1970, the festival has evolved from a modest gathering of 1,500 people to a world-renowned extravaganza with a capacity exceeding 210,000 attendees. Its lineup is legendary for its diversity, featuring the biggest names in contemporary music on iconic stages such as the Pyramid Stage, Other Stage, and West Holts, alongside thousands of other performances across more than 80 smaller stages and performance areas. Beyond music, Glastonbury offers a rich tapestry of experiences including dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other art forms, spread across sprawling themed areas like Silver Hayes, The Park, and the Green Fields, each with a distinctive atmosphere. This event is not just a festival but a cultural pilgrimage celebrating creativity and community spirit, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary British culture. Demand for tickets is extraordinarily high, typically selling out within minutes.

Attending Glastonbury Festival (June 25-29, 2025) is an unparalleled experience requiring careful planning. Securing tickets is the first hurdle: photo registration months before the sale is mandatory. General admission tickets and ticket + coach packages are sold exclusively via SeeTickets and sell out within minutes, typically in November of the preceding year, with a limited resale in April. The general admission ticket price for 2025 is £373.50 plus booking fees, with an initial deposit payable.

Getting to Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset: Public transport is strongly encouraged. Train services run to Castle Cary, from where free shuttle buses operate to the site. National Express coaches also run directly to the festival. If driving, car park passes must be purchased in advance and are chargeable; be prepared for long queues entering and exiting.

Camping: Camping is included in the ticket price. There are numerous campsites, each with its own atmosphere. Fields like Pennard Hill are known for being livelier, while others like Cockmill or Wicket Ground are quieter and family-friendly. Arrive early (gates usually open Wednesday morning) for more choice of space. Consider proximity to toilets (composting and long-drop), water points, and the stages you're most interested in. Don't forget a sturdy, waterproof tent, good sleeping bag, mat, and a trolley for transporting your gear from the car/coach.

What to Bring: Prepare for all British weather. Essentials include: wellington boots, raincoat, warm clothing for evenings, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. Biodegradable wipes, hand sanitiser, and your own toilet roll are very useful. You are allowed to bring your own food and alcohol (reasonable amounts for personal consumption).

Inside the Festival: With over 100 stages and areas, it's impossible to see everything. Download the official app or get a programme to plan who to see, but also allow yourself to wander and explore. There are cash machines (which charge a fee) and many stalls accept card, but some cash is advisable. The food offering is vast, with hundreds of stalls offering global cuisines and options for all budgets, including the £6 meal initiative at many traders.
