Chivas USA

Club Deportivo Chivas USA was an American professional soccer franchise that had a presence in Major League Soccer (MLS) for a decade, from its inaugural season in 2005 until it ceased operations in 2014. Founded on August 2, 2004, the club was based in Carson, California, and played its home games at the StubHub Center, a stadium it shared with the LA Galaxy. The creation of Chivas USA was driven by Jorge Vergara, then owner of C.D. Guadalajara, with the aim of expanding the 'Chivas' brand and appealing to the considerable Mexican-American population in Southern California. The team adopted the red-and-white colors and the 'The Goats' nickname from its parent club.

In its early years, Chivas USA achieved notable sporting success, qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs in four consecutive seasons from 2006 to 2009, and topping the Western Conference in 2007 under coach Preki. However, the club never managed to win an MLS Cup title. From 2010 onwards, the team's performance declined significantly, accompanied by dwindling attendance and off-field controversies, including allegations of discriminatory practices. These problems culminated in MLS acquiring the franchise in February 2014, and its subsequent dissolution on October 27 of that year, after the regular season ended. The league later awarded a new expansion franchise in Los Angeles, Los Angeles FC, which began play in 2018.

Complete guide of Chivas USA

Remembering the Chivas USA experience, which competed in Major League Soccer from 2005 to 2014, is to evoke a particular stage of soccer in Los Angeles. The team played its home games at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, a venue it shared with its city rival, the LA Galaxy. For fans wishing to experience the excitement of a Chivas USA match, ticket purchases were managed through sales points authorized by the league and the club at that time. It was advisable to plan arrival at the stadium in advance, considering Los Angeles area traffic and matchday crowds, especially during the SuperClasico against the Galaxy.

The StubHub Center offered various amenities, although the Chivas USA experience was often perceived as that of the visiting team in its own stadium due to the Galaxy's larger fanbase. The club had periods of good soccer, especially between 2006 and 2009, when it managed to qualify for the playoffs consecutively. However, the later years were marked by a decline in attendance and performance. The club's dissolution in October 2014 closed this chapter, but its existence influenced MLS's subsequent decision to introduce another franchise in Los Angeles, Los Angeles FC, with a renewed approach.
